چکیده
A new procedure for alkaline digestion of hair was used for the selectivedetermination of total and inorganic mercury by flameless atomic absorption and the determination of methylmercury by an improved gas-chromatographic procedure. The precision of the measurements by atomic absorption for total, inorganic, and organic mercury (by difference) was 1.9%, 6.5%, and 2.1%, respectively. Recoveries ranged from 98 to 99.4%. The precision of the measurements of methylmercury by gas chromatography was 3.7% and the recovery 95.6%. Individual samples were corrected for recovery by using radiolabeled methylmercury. A high level of correlation (r = .99) was found between methylmercury as measured by gas chromatography and organic mercury as determined by atomic absorption. Contamination of hair by external applications of mercurials was differentiated from mercury deposited in hair from the diet by means of a special washing procedure, which removed selectively the externally absorbed Hg#{176}, Hg2, and CH3Hg. The internally deposited mercury was shown to be stable in spite of exposure to various cosmetic and washing treatments.

Determining Total Mercury in Samples from the Persian Gulf and theCaspian Sea: Comparison of Dry Ash and Wet Extraction Mothods
Monitoring of mercury in environmental samples, with its proven toxicity on the food chain, requires sensitive and accurate analytical techniques. In this study, two methods for identification and quantification of total mercury in biological and sediment samples are compared: i) dry ash preparation and subsequent established procedures for Combustion Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, (AMA 254) ...
متن کاملHair Mercury Levels in Six Iranian Sub-populations for Estimation of Methylmercury Exposure: A Mini-review
Background: Mercury is widespread and persistent in the environment. One organic form of mercury, Methylmercury (MeHg), can accumulate in the food chain in aquatic ecosystems and lead to high concentrations of MeHg in fish, which, when consumed by humans, can result in an increased risk of adverse effects. Currently, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established...

متن کاملDetermination of mercury speciation in fish tissue with a direct mercury analyzer.
Knowledge of Hg speciation in tissue is valuable for assessing potential toxicological effects in fish. Direct Hg analyzers, which use thermal decomposition and atomic absorption spectrometry, have recently gained popularity for determining organic Hg after procedural solvent extraction from some environmental media, although quantitative recovery from lipid-rich materials, such as fish liver, ...
متن کاملDetermination of total mercury and methylmercury in human hair by graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry using 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate as a complexing agent.
For the determination of total mercury in hair, an amount (25.0 mg) of hair sample was digested with conc. HNO3 (400 microl) at 90 degrees C for 10 min in a 7-ml teflon microreaction vessel. After digestion, the pH of the acidic hair mixture was adjusted to 5.0-6.0 by NaOH and was then passed through a clean-up Sep-Pak C18 cartridge. To the eluate, 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate (DMPS) and s...
